Life-ennobling technology. R&D to nourish people, communities, and the planet.

Open. Peer-governed. Anti-fragile. Self-learning.

01

Open by design

Every artefact we ship goes into the commons. Infrastructure tools as free software; sensing and dual-use tools carry ethical-use restrictions to limit harm.

02

Patent-free IP posture

No defensive patents, no offensive patents. The open licence does the heavy lifting. Co-op IP cannot be enclosed by any member or partner.

03

Applied R&D as the core

Output is open; commercial value comes from execution, integration, and trust. Research methods become reusable workflows, not one-off effort.

The institutional form is upstream of the innovation.

Large orgs optimise for certainty. Government labs game metrics. Companies underinvest in long-term bets. Existing institutions select for more of the same.

"Only variety can absorb variety." (Ashby) A cooperative of cross-disciplinary researchers has more response repertoire than any hierarchical team.

AI collapses the marginal cost of producing knowledge artefacts. Cross-disciplinary knowledge combines combinatorially, not additively. The people who do the work own the work and set the direction.

Designed for our times.

Hock · peer networks

Semi-autonomous peers

The most resilient systems are peer networks, not command chains. Engagement teams form around projects; circles coordinate across them.

Ashby · requisite variety

Variety absorbs variety

Over-specialisation leads to extinction (Fuller). A cross-disciplinary cooperative has more response repertoire than a hierarchical team.

Taleb · anti-fragility

Anti-fragile by design

A cooperative with skin in the game gains capability from disorder. Every engagement is a probe; every failure is subtractive knowledge.

Bateson · symmathesy

The institution learns by running

The cooperative studies its own processes through the tools it builds. Governance, coordination, and research infrastructure are the R&D.

A cooperative of cross-disciplinary researchers handles complexity no individual can. AI accelerates synthesis; humans hold hypothesis, interpretation, ethics, and irreversible decisions.

The shape is in what we won't do.

Four constraints define the cooperative. Each is load-bearing. Each is in the constitution. Each is what makes this the kind of thing it is.

01 · sortition

Directors chosen by random selection.

Cryptographic random selection. Six-month rotation. No elections, no campaigns, no consecutive service. Prevents capture.

02 · ethical veto

Any member can pause any decision.

Override requires a 75% special resolution. Categorical refusals — surveillance, weapons, manipulation, discrimination, power-concentration — cannot be overridden. Keeps the work honest.

03 · non-distributing

No shareholders. No profit distribution.

Surplus flows to the cooperative entity, not to members. Members are paid for traced work, not surplus. No extraction pressure. The co-op is self-determining.

04 · ip open

Patent-free. No non-competes.

Every artefact goes to the commons. Members pursue independent commercial activities. Alignment through transparency, not restriction.

SPINdle: one free software project, many surfaces.

LGPL-3.0 · patent-free

A defeasible logic reasoning engine: rules that can be overridden by stronger evidence. Ships as CLI, Rust library, and WebAssembly.

~35 person-years Upstream research at Griffith, NICTA, CSIRO Data61. Equivalent investment ~$7–8M AUD.
2 people Anuna's ports: 5–6 months part-time, ~95K lines across Racket and Rust, with capabilities the original never shipped.
~$0 Pre-LLM cost: $1.5–2M. Actual: near zero. Built adjacent to paid consulting with AI-assisted development and open tooling.

One R&D investment. Open distribution. Multiple commercial surfaces. None require enclosing the commons. Each use case has contributed improvements back to the core engine.

the future is unwritten

We are forming the cooperative.

People who want to do serious applied research, ship free software with real-world impact, build trustworthy institutions designed for our collective benefit, and bring their own ideas about how this should work.
