In 2014, Lockheed Martin demonstrated the FORTIS exoskeleton to the US Navy. A shipyard worker wearing the device could hold a 16-kilogram grinder overhead for extended periods without fatigue. The exoskeleton did not know how to grind welds. It did not understand metallurgy or the sequence of operations that determines whether a hull section passes inspection. It transferred load from the operator's muscles through an external frame to the ground. What it amplified was the body inside it.
Remove the experienced welder and the FORTIS is furniture. The frame holds position. The grinder stays aloft. Nothing useful happens.
Your company issued the scaffolding. The question is what was already inside the suit.
Terence Tao, arguably the greatest living mathematician, recently adjudicated AI-generated solutions to a number of the Erdos Problems: more than a thousand open mathematical questions accumulated over Paul Erdos's career. The AI models solved some. Tao called them "cheap wins": the "long tail of very obscure problems," not the challenges that animate mathematical research. If an expert had half a day to look into the matter, they would have worked it out too.
Tao described AI as reaching the level of a "junior human co-author, especially one willing to do grunt work and work out tedious cases." The tool is genuinely useful. But its usefulness scales with the expertise of the human directing it. An experienced mathematician asking the right questions gets architectural insight. A student asking the wrong ones gets confident nonsense.
Your tech lead is Tao in this analogy. You are not. That is not a permanent condition. But it is the current one.
A comment on Hacker News crystallised the opposing position. One commenter argued that eventually "it will be the users sculpting formal systems like playdoh." The tools will become so capable that domain expertise becomes unnecessary. The user shapes intent. The system handles the rest.
The reply: "Unless the user is a competent programmer, at least in spirit, it will look like the creation of the 3-year-old next door, not like Wallace and Gromit."
Both positions contain truth, which is why the tension resists resolution. Spreadsheets genuinely democratised financial modelling. They also enabled catastrophic errors by people who did not understand the models they were building. The tool was the same. The outcomes diverged based on what the user brought to it.
"Who the hell knows" may be the most epistemically responsible position available.
Tao offered a second metaphor. Learning mathematics through AI-generated proofs, he suggested, is like being helicoptered to the top of a mountain. You reach the summit. You see the view. "You miss all the benefits of the journey itself": the fitness, the knowledge of the terrain, the navigational instincts that develop only through climbing.
Vygotsky called this the zone of proximal development: learning occurs at the boundary between what a person can do alone and what they can achieve with assistance. A tutor who scaffolds understanding develops capability. A system that delivers finished output provides a result without the residue of understanding.
Your tech lead's fifteen years are not credentials. They are the compressed record of problems encountered, patterns recognised, failures absorbed. The AI tools activate this structure. They give it new surfaces to operate on. They do not create it.
Bodies develop. Muscles grow. An exoskeleton worn during rehabilitation can build the strength that eventually makes the exoskeleton unnecessary. The question is whether AI tools function as rehabilitation or as a wheelchair: supportive, genuinely valuable, but not developing the capacity they supplement.
These tools may be the most powerful learning accelerators ever built. Or they may be the most seductive way to avoid the struggle that produces competence. They are probably, in the way of most significant technologies, both at once: depending not on the tool but on the intention and awareness of the person inside the suit.
