The Familiar Narrative

Dear Anxious Specifier,

A familiar narrative circulates: AI agents can write code, send emails, coordinate tasks; therefore mass unemployment follows. The logic feels inevitable until you examine it closely. Dan Nolan's recent piece "You Should Probably Worry About Your Next Job" is the latest iteration. It is well written, but it adds little that is new. The claim that if an agent can write code or send an email then, ipso facto, mass unemployment ensues is not a revelation. Marx observed that capital desires to replace labour with machines. The interesting question is not whether agents can produce code. They can. The interesting question is whether producing code was ever the hard part.

Marx Deserves Better

Nolan invokes Marx to lend gravity to the displacement argument: capital always desires to replace labour with machines. This is true as far as it goes, which is not very far. It treats Marx as a fortune-cookie prophet of automation when the actual theory points somewhere far more interesting and far less convenient for the narrative.

Marx's labour theory of value holds that only living labour creates surplus value. Machines, no matter how sophisticated, transfer their own value to commodities through depreciation; they do not generate new value. This distinction is not academic. It is the engine of one of Marx's central predictions: the tendency of the rate of profit to fall. As capital substitutes machinery for workers (increasing what Marx called the organic composition of capital, the ratio of constant capital to variable capital), the source of surplus value shrinks. Profit margins compress. The system undermines the very mechanism that sustains it.

Apply this to the AI agent thesis and something uncomfortable emerges. If agents replace the labour that generates surplus value in software production, capital faces a contradiction it cannot resolve through further automation. The products may still have use-value. People may still want the software. But the exchange-value, and therefore the profit extractable from its production, erodes precisely because the living labour has been removed. Who captures the surplus when there is no surplus to capture? Who buys the product when the workers who would have earned wages building it have been displaced?

This is not a minor oversight. It is the difference between reading Marx as "machines take jobs" and reading Marx as "capitalism contains structural contradictions that automation intensifies rather than resolves." Nolan wants the rhetorical weight of citing Marx without the inconvenient conclusion that the displacement he describes may be as destructive to capital as it is to labour. Marx would not have predicted mass unemployment as a stable outcome. He would have predicted crisis.

The irony is that a more careful reading of Marx actually strengthens the case for concern, just not the concern Nolan articulates. The worry is not simply that workers lose their jobs. It is that the economic system predicated on extracting value from their labour loses its own coherence. That is a considerably more unsettling proposition than "you should update your LinkedIn."

The Software Anomaly

The software industry makes a tempting case study for AI displacement. Tight feedback loops, clear success metrics, and outputs that can be validated programmatically: these properties make software unusually amenable to agent-assisted production. But two features of the industry caution against extrapolation.

First, software has been awash with cheap capital. Over the last decade, venture capital and private equity funding inflated teams well beyond what delivery demanded. Many organisations carried engineering headcount that reflected access to capital rather than technical necessity. When hiring contracts, it is difficult to disentangle "AI replaced these roles" from "the funding environment that created them has normalised." The correction was already underway before agents became capable.

Second, each industry has its own dynamics. Regulatory navigation, physical constraints, institutional knowledge, domain-specific judgement: these vary enormously across sectors. Software's relative tractability for automation tells us something about software. It tells us less about healthcare administration, construction logistics, or legal practice than commentators assume.

The Specification Bottleneck

Here is the tension that the displacement narrative consistently underweights. Code production has always been the comparatively straightforward part of building systems. The bottleneck lies in specification: clearly articulating what needs to be built, in a domain that keeps shifting, with requirements that emerge through the process of building itself. This includes knowing what the final state should look like, which itself keeps changing.

Software lives in a world of humans, organisational bottlenecks, uncertainty, and competing values. The work of navigating that world, of translating ambiguous human need into precise enough intent to act on, remains stubbornly resistant to automation. Agents accelerate the translation from specification to implementation. They do not eliminate the need for specification. If anything, cheaper implementation raises the relative value of the ability to specify well.

Consider the experience of building something genuinely novel. Not a CRUD application or a landing page, but a system that operates in territory where the design space itself is uncertain. Current AI requires substantial guidance in these contexts. It can produce code fluently but struggles to hold the kind of sustained, evolving mental model that complex system design demands. The hand-holding required is not incidental. It reflects something fundamental about where the difficulty actually lives.

The Advancing Frontier

This argument has an obvious vulnerability. A year ago, one might have said with confidence that AI could handle local code changes but could not reason across or design whole systems. That boundary has moved. It would be imprudent to assume any particular capability boundary is permanent.

The honest position is uncertainty. There may be no part of software engineering that is fundamentally beyond AI systems; it may only be a question of how long it takes to reach each capability threshold. The NRA slogan comes to mind, uncomfortably repurposed: the only thing that stops a bad guy with an AI is a good guy with an AI. There remains significant leverage in skilled, experienced engineers using these tools. Whether that leverage persists indefinitely or merely buys time is not a question anyone can answer with confidence.

We find ourselves switching positions on this daily. The same person who argues for human irreplaceability in the morning discovers a new capability by afternoon that undermines the argument. This instability of conviction might itself be informative. It suggests we are in a genuinely liminal period where the old categories of "what machines can do" and "what requires humans" are being renegotiated in real time.

Values All the Way Down

What the displacement narrative most consistently overlooks is that software development, like most knowledge work, is value-laden. Not in the abstract philosophical sense alone, but in the concrete, daily sense: every design decision encodes assumptions about what matters, who it matters to, and what tradeoffs are acceptable.

This is more than a technical observation. It connects to a broader pattern where we treat technology as value-neutral and are then surprised when it reproduces the values of whoever configured it. An agent that can write code still requires someone to decide what the code should do, for whom, and at whose expense. These decisions involve judgement that is irreducibly human, not because machines lack processing power but because the judgements themselves are constitutive of human organisation.

The question is not whether AI will write more of our code. It will. The question is whether the work that remains, the specification, the value judgements, the navigation of human systems, constitutes enough to sustain the profession as we know it. Or whether the economic model of software transforms into something we do not yet have language for.

So: don't learn to weld. Not because welding isn't noble work, but because the anxiety that drove you to consider it misidentifies the threat. The article that cost you sleep treats code production as the job. It isn't. Your job is specification, judgement, and navigating the mess of human intent. Agents make you faster at the part that was already the easy part. The hard part is still yours.
